Choosing a Coil Resistance

Resistance Draw Power Pairs with Coil life
1.0 - 1.4 ohm Tight, cigarette-like Low Salt nicotine Longest
0.6 - 0.9 ohm Medium Moderate Salt or low-strength freebase Good
0.3 - 0.6 ohm Open Higher Low-strength freebase Moderate
0.1 - 0.3 ohm Wide open, direct-lung High Low-strength freebase only Shortest

Resistance, measured in ohms, is the number that decides how a coil behaves. Lower resistance draws more power, makes more vapour and heat, and gets through e-liquid and coils faster. Higher resistance is cooler and tighter and lasts longer.

Never put high-strength salt nicotine in a sub-ohm coil. A 0.15 ohm coil delivers many times the vapour of a 1.2 ohm pod, and with it many times the nicotine.

Which Coil Do You Need?

Find the family name. It is printed on the tank or named on your device's product page - RPM, Nord, LP, PnP, GTX, Super Mesh, Nautilus BVC and so on. The family is what determines fit.

Watch the generation number. RPM, RPM 2, RPM 3 and RPM 4 are four different families. So are Crown 3, 4 and 5, and Falcon versus Falcon 2. The number matters as much as the name.

Then pick the resistance from the options stocked in that family, using the table above.

If your device takes a pod rather than a coil, see replacement pods instead.

How to Make Coils Last Longer

Prime every new coil. Put a few drops of e-liquid directly on the exposed cotton, fill the tank, and wait several minutes before firing. This one habit prevents most burnt coils.

Stay inside the wattage range printed on the coil. Running above it cooks the cotton.

Go easy on sweetened e-liquid. Sugars caramelise on the coil and are by far the biggest cause of coils dying early. Dark, dessert and heavily sweetened flavours are the worst offenders.

Do not let the tank run dry. Refill before it empties; firing with no e-liquid over the cotton burns it immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a vape coil last?

One to two weeks is normal. Sweetened and dark e-liquids can cut it to a few days. Replace the coil when flavour dulls rather than waiting for a burnt taste.

Why does my new coil taste burnt straight away?

It was almost certainly not primed. Add e-liquid to the cotton, fill, and wait several minutes before the first puff.

What does the ohm number mean?

It is electrical resistance. Lower numbers draw more power and produce more vapour and heat; higher numbers are cooler, tighter and longer-lasting.

Can I use a coil from another brand?

No. Coil fittings are proprietary, and often differ between generations of the same brand's hardware. Match the family name on your device.

Which resistance should I use with salt nicotine?

A higher resistance, roughly 0.8 ohm and above. High-strength salt nicotine in a sub-ohm coil delivers far too much nicotine.

Where can I buy vape coils in Canada?

NYX Vape ships across Canada with free shipping on orders over $99 and stock at six Greater Toronto Area stores. Same-day local delivery across the Toronto GTA is free on orders over $75.
