Always check your device manual for the required cell size and minimum continuous discharge rating. Many 21700 mods also accept an 18650 with an adapter sleeve, but never run a cell below the amp rating your device calls for.
You run a single-battery regulated mod - An 18650 in the 2500-3000mAh range with a 20A or higher continuous rating covers almost every mainstream device. Keep a second cell charged so you are never caught out.
You vape sub-ohm at higher wattages - Choose a 21700 if your mod accepts one. The extra capacity means fewer charge cycles per day, and the higher amp rating gives you margin at the top of your wattage range.
You run a dual-battery mod - Buy cells in matched pairs, same brand, same model, bought at the same time, and always charge and rotate them together. Mismatched cells in a dual-battery device are the most common cause of uneven discharge.
You want to charge outside the device - An external multi-bay charger such as the Efest Lush series charges faster, shows per-cell status on an LED display, and cuts off automatically when each cell is full. It also lets you charge spares while you keep vaping.
Inspect the wrap. A torn or nicked battery wrap exposes the negative casing and can short against metal. Re-wrap the cell or retire it - never use a battery with damaged insulation.
Carry cells in a case. Loose batteries in a pocket or bag can short against keys and coins. A plastic battery case costs very little and prevents the most common vaping battery incident.
Match the amp rating to your build. The lower the resistance and the higher the wattage, the more current the cell has to deliver. Staying inside the manufacturer's continuous discharge rating keeps the cell cool and extends its life.
Retire cells that have aged. Batteries that get noticeably warm, hold charge poorly, or have been dropped should be recycled rather than pushed further. Most Ontario municipalities accept lithium cells at household hazardous waste depots.
Use a charger with protection. Intelligent chargers monitor each bay independently and stop at full charge. Charging unattended overnight on an unprotected charger is not worth the risk.

Most regulated box mods use a removable 18650, 20700 or 21700 lithium-ion cell. Your device manual states the required size and the minimum continuous discharge rating. If the manual is gone, the battery bay itself is usually marked, and our staff can identify it for you in store.
mAh is capacity - how long the cell lasts between charges. The amp rating, listed as continuous discharge or CDR, is how much current the cell can safely deliver at once. Capacity affects convenience; the amp rating affects safety, so never drop below what your device and coil build require.
Either works for a single cell, but an external multi-bay charger is the better habit. It charges each cell independently, shows status per bay, cuts off at full charge, and lets you rotate spares so the device is never out of action. Dual-battery mods in particular benefit from external charging.
Lithium-ion cells in regular use typically last six months to a year before capacity drops noticeably. Replace a cell sooner if it runs warm, discharges quickly, has been dropped, or shows any tear in the wrap. Recycle old cells at a household hazardous waste depot rather than in household rubbish.
Stop using it. A torn wrap exposes the metal casing, which is the negative terminal, and can short against anything conductive. Re-wrap the cell with a proper heat-shrink sleeve or retire it. This is the single most common preventable battery fault we see.
Most replacement coils last one to two weeks with regular use. Replace the coil when flavour turns muted or burnt, vapour production drops, or the device starts to gurgle. Coils are listed separately under Replacement Coils.
